Self care is a very buzzy and trendy marketing term as of the publication of this article. However, self care is an essential part of personal development and personal transformation. I love to share my self-care tips and tricks to help you on your journey to the best version of yourself by sharing my personal tips on how I stay in shape.
Exercise
I know that the word exercise can be intimidating or even boring to hear sometimes. I remember at some point in my journey I became bored of traditional exercise like running or going to the gym. I even tried to workout at home and I was not motivated. I decided to find activities and hobbies that I enjoy doing that will also keep me in shape.
What’s your favorite exercise? Comment Below!
- Cycling: I enjoy riding bikes. Something about cycling makes me feel free and adventurous. I will literally starting saying, weeeeeeeeee out loud as I go down a hill on a bike. As a City dweller, I have a citi bike membership. I love it because I do not have to worry about having my own bike, parking it places or worrying about someone stealing it.
- Pilates: Pilates is life changing. I love the versatility of movements, exercises and stretches that I experience during each session. It’s never boring! I love the fact that I have a relationship with my core and my posture that I did not have before Pilates.
- Running: I like to run only when the weather is beautiful either early in the morning or during sunset. I feel so alive when I am running during those times. I also use that time to meditate and express gratitude to the universe.
Diet
Diet is another dirty word that no one likes to hear. My best tip and trick for sticking to a diet is to make it personal. Here is what I mean by that. I was diagnosed with Fibroids a few years ago. It got really bad and I had to have surgery to remove it. In the process of learning about fibroids, what causes it and looking at natural paths to treat the problem. I learned about toxins that we consume from the water we drink, the air we breathe to the foods we eat and even the personal care items that we use like Deodorants and Tampons. I decided that there are things that I am not in control of like the air we breathe. However, I knew that there were other things that I can control like what I eat. This understanding made my food choices a lot easier for me.
My current diet is organic fruits, vegetables and anti-inflammatory. I do cheat when I go out and I like to indulge in some fish when I do cheat. Here is an overview of my current down.
- Intermittent Fasting: I do not eat on a schedule like most people who eat breakfast every morning at 7 am, lunch at 12 pm, dinner at 8 pm. Intermittent fasting means that I go long periods of time in between meal and I only eat when I feel hungry.
- Fruits: I like a fruit juice, a smoothie or an Acai Bowl as my breakfast. I usually eat this around 11 or 12 depending on when I feel hungry. Sometimes I have fruits as my snack and for dinner.
- Vegetables: I eat vegetables for lunch, this does not happen on a specific schedule, I eat my next meal the next time I feel hungry which is sometimes around 3 pm.
- Avocado: I love Avocados. Sometimes I have an Avocado Toast for breakfast or I have Avocado with gluten free paleo bread at night.
Meditation
I know you might be thinking, what does meditation have to do with staying in shape. Meditation is a cure for almost everything if you ask me. I came across a video on YouTube where Shawn Stevenson explained fat burning in a way that I have never heard anyone explain it before, it included breathing.
These are all of the habits and tricks that keep me in shape. Share in the comments below, what do you find in your life that keeps you in shape?
